The sixteenth edition of the annual publication of the VMRG, the trade association for metal facade construction, has been published. Façades 2024 is a compilation of inspiring and daring projects recently completed. The rich Dutch architecture is highlighted, but the characters of the facades that come to life through the use of metal steal the show!
Besides its infinite application possibilities, metal has many advantages for façade solutions for both small- and large-scale new construction and renovation. In addition, metal has a long lifespan and is 100% and infinitely recyclable while maintaining quality.
Ben van Berkel (right in photo), architect and founder of UNStudio, received the very first copy of the book from Henk Zoontjens, director at the VMRG. The cover of Façades 2024 features ODE Apartments, the apartment section of City Campus on Amsterdam's Oosterdokseiland. In City Campus, living, working and entertainment come together. Ben van Berkel/UNStudio, responsible for the design of this multifunctional building: "I am very happy that our project has been selected to be included in this book. At UNStudio, it is always a priority to select the most sustainable and circular materials from the beginning of each design." The international allure of this prestigious project is due in large part to the detailing of the facades, which, according to the architect, reduce the sheer size of the building and reflect the sparkle of the water and sky.
Façades 2024 consists of 216 pages of diverse façade construction projects in which VMRG companies have been involved. The book is divided into non-residential construction, residential construction, renovation, transformation and solar projects. Each project indicates whether the project was realized under the VMRG Quality Mark. All companies with this quality mark deliver guaranteed quality in the field of facades. They are regularly inspected for this, both in the factory and on the building site. The European tendering directives offer scope to prescribe the VMRG Quality Mark in specifications. Every company with the VMRG Quality Mark is awarded an annual VMRG Quality Mark certificate after the inspections have been passed, so that a client can be certain that the company meets the high standards of the VMRG Quality Requirements and Recommendations.
Between the different categories of projects, the book includes a number of articles. These focus on the endless possibilities and special characteristics of metal. It also highlights aluminum in a special way and explains how the plans for a Circular Facade Economy, an initiative of the VMRG, are being further rolled out and how solar shading is included in the energy performance calculation.
The book can also be viewed online. The online version contains links for each project to more information about the project and about the company that was involved in that project. The VMRG website offers a sign-up option on the home page for the Inspiration Newsletter to stay informed about interesting projects each month.
