Industry associations VHS and IJG push for digitization

On Wednesday, November 29, 2023, Branchevereniging Hang- en Sluitwerk VHS, Vereniging fabrikanten van IJzerwaren en Gereedschap (IJG) and Ketenstandaard Bouw en Techniek signed a covenant aimed at supporting and accelerating digitization in the construction, industrial and installation sectors. The main objective of the covenant is to encourage and support members in the uniform delivery and application of product data.

Importance of the covenant

The covenant enables the parties to meet customer requests, include product data in digital files, improve internal business processes and anticipate laws and regulations. By choosing the ETIM classification as the standard, the parties want the industry to cooperate better and increase the quality of product data.

The initiative is essential to support the ambitions of the associations' members, their clients and customers and to contribute to societal challenges in the construction industry. The focus is on switching to uniform, validated, up-to-date product data that can be processed in a standardized manner by customers and clients.

Manufacturers and suppliers play a crucial role as a source of information, where they are responsible for adding and monitoring relevant product data. Construction and technical wholesalers receive the data digitally in a standard format, after which they provide translation to market demand and application in construction.

Collaboration and support

As representatives of manufacturers and suppliers, IJG and VHS take an active role in getting members to join the covenant and support them in implementing and using the ETIM standard. Ketenstandaard Bouw en Techniek supports the implementation or expansion of ETIM classification within organizations.

The covenant was developed in consultation with Royal Hibin, initiator of the Covenant Network of Construction Supply, and is consistent with it. For ratification, the covenant has been co-signed by Royal Hibin as a supporter and VHS and IJG have signed Royal Hibin's covenant.

About ETIM

ETIM (ETIM Technical Information Model), the jointly chosen standard, plays a crucial role in this initiative. It stands for a uniform classification of technical products, enabling a structured and unambiguous exchange of product data. By embracing ETIM, the parties aim not only for improved cooperation, but also for a more efficient and effective digitization of the construction industry.
