On Amsterdam's Zuidas in 2023, The Newton, an apartment complex with 101 rental units, emerged. The building's distinctive triangular shape allows as much daylight as possible into the apartments. This is partly thanks to the room-high window frames; a successful synergy of Rollecate's aluminum tilt-and-turn windows and Siegenia's ALU axxent PLUS window fittings.
The Zuidas is increasingly developing into a lively Amsterdam city district with housing, offices and facilities. The Newton project, a design by Diederendirrix architects commissioned by developer COD, fits perfectly into this picture. Here modern urban living is combined with greenery and accessibility. The Newton stands for 'light'. The high ceilings of 2.90 meters and the slender almost room-high window frames not only guarantee a beautiful view, but also ensure a beautiful light in the apartments.
The Newton - a strong example of modern architecture - was designed in the style of the Amsterdam School, matching the architectural style of the adjacent Rivierenbuurt. Much attention was also paid to its green character. For example, water-retarding green strips have been constructed around the building that can collect large amounts of rainwater. On top of the building is a roof terrace that remains green all year round. Meanwhile, solar panels on the roof and a heat and cold storage system provide as much sustainable energy as possible. For this project, which is iconic for the Zuidas, Rollecate - as a major Dutch player in the field of aluminum and steel facades and facade parts - supplied and installed anthracite-colored aluminum tilt-and-turn windows, tilt-and-turn doors, balcony doors and revolving doors. A special textured coating was used for the desired matt look of the frames. In this way Rollecate made a substantial contribution to the desired high-end appearance of the apartment complex.
In order to ensure optimal daylight penetration in the large window areas, particularly slim window profiles were preferred. Here the choice fell on the new ALU axxent PLUS from Siegenia. "This system is the perfect solution for design-oriented room concepts such as The Newton," says Siegenia technical coordinator Marten van Dijk. "Thanks to the completely concealed, invisible hardware components, the window profiles can be reduced even further and the glass surfaces enlarged. The larger glass proportion brings more light into
the homes."
Another big advantage of this innovative window fitting with its invisible hinges, according to Marten, is its high load-bearing capacity of up to 150 kg. "This allows even large and heavy window elements - as is the case with The Newton - to move safely and permanently. Thanks to the ALU axxent PLUS hardware, it is possible to achieve window heights of up to 3 meters, even in today's narrow window profiles."
Siegenia's technical coordinator emphasizes that the ALU axxent PLUS also has many advantages for the installer: "This system is part of the ALU modular system, which consistently reduces the number of individual components while offering the greatest freedom of choice and design. Due to the complete pre-assembly, the final assembly requires considerably less work. In addition, this system is also suitable for extremely narrow windows of only 210 mm for turn-tilt sashes and 380 mm for tilt-turn sashes."
