Rijnstate Hospital in Arnhem provides over half a million residents with hospital care of top clinical quality. The hospital was created in the 1980s after mergers between three Arnhem hospitals. Thus, the largest general hospital in the region was born. A new building complex opened its doors in 1995, after which the center quickly emerged as a specialized treatment center. The focus is on critical and complex care. For example, there is an extensive and modern surgical complex on top of a renovated Intensive Care Unit.
With an organization so focused on taking care of people, there is naturally a concern for infrastructure. The building must evolve with the times to provide the best care. For example, in recent years there have been renovations to the surgery complex and intensive care areas. A new Center for Women and Children was built and the inpatient psychiatric ward was completely redesigned.
Thus, the exterior of the building also needed to be taken care of. Overheating is a very hot building issue on many projects, and it was also an item on the agenda here. In very healthy people, health problems can already occur with prolonged and excessively hot weather. So for a more sensitive target group such as hospital patients, a solid solution had to be found.
Thus, during the renovation works of the facade, the DucoSun Cubic was chosen. This architectural solar protection allows to counteract the heating of the building in a natural and energy-efficient way. The product is distinguished by a sleek, rectangular slat shape. Its placement on the facade provides a maximum of diffused sunlight, keeping out heat but still allowing sufficient light to enter.
Rijnstate Hospital in Arnhem chose a sustainable solution to combat overheating, taking an important step toward the future. The facade slats will contribute to a pleasant indoor climate for decades, allowing Rijnstate employees to continue their important work.
