Replacing a 38-millimeter-thick door with a 54-millimeter-thick one provides a substantial increase in facade insulation and a strong reduction in drafts. These are appealing benefits that result in increased living comfort and safety, lower energy bills and a substantial reduction in CO2. At the same time, replacing existing doors is a piece of cake. This is proven by the video recently launched by GND Garantiedeuren, which shows step by step that a door with a thickness of 54 millimeters can be placed in almost any existing wooden frame. Without any significant problems.
With the Housing Monitor, Natuur & Milieu has provided insight into where in the Netherlands
homes with the poor energy labels E, F or G. "The government wants all homes with these labels to be gone by 2030," said Henk Breel, director of GND Garantiedeuren, the umbrella body of leading Dutch wood door manufacturers for more than 40 years. "In total, this involves some 1.5 million homes."
To achieve the formulated climate goals for 2050, the government has set a standard for the entire house. In addition, target values have been formulated when an individual building component of a house, such as a door, is future-proofed. For new construction, 54 millimeters has been the minimum thickness of a door for more than 20 years. In order to meet these target values, the government has adopted this door thickness.
In addition, a door must now have a minimum u-value of 1.4W/m2K, a figure that is achieved when 54-millimeter-thick doors with HR++ glass and frame sealing are used. It's a requirement that Breel says is still far too rarely observed in practice, however.
"Often poorly insulating and keeled 38-millimeter doors are replaced with new ones of the same thickness. An unwise choice. In fact, the relatively low additional cost of a door 54 millimeters thick is quickly recouped. At the same time, the home meets the 2050 climate goals."
Moreover, the installation of a 54-millimeter door usually does not require any modification of the existing frame. By applying a frame profile, the gap between the door and frame can be bridged perfectly and the sealing is optimal. Only when installed in an internal situation (such as a front door) should the connection at the bottom of the door be specifically considered.
"The film shows in words and images that you can easily install 54 mm doors in an existing 38 mm frame profile," Breel highlights the brand new communication tool. "In this way, we guide corporations, VVEs and maintenance companies in a targeted way to a sustainable and future-proof end result. The door manufacturers affiliated with us make a major contribution to this. Simply because they offer many different options for providing doors with the right profile and a perfect frame seal at the factory. Combined with expert electronic measuring, this always results in a perfect solution.
The film can be accessed through the website of GND. "When you scan the QR code attached to the hinge side of the doors manufactured by members, you also get insight into the properties and insulation value of the door in question. Very handy and valuable," Breel concludes.
